April News from the VEEP

What By the time you receive this newsletter our ski season will be over for the year. The Boyne, Aspen, and Banff trips were thoroughly enjoyed by all who went on them, but I am sad to see the ski season at an end. As a last hurrah, Wendy O’Toole and I still have our spring trip to Alta, April 6-12. With the end of ski season, we begin to plan for next year and the first order of business is to elect the board for the following season. Elections for president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer will be held at the April 19th membership meeting, 7:30, Packy’s at the Hope Hotel . As of the writing of this article the following people are standing for election: President – Janet Wentworth, Vice-President – Mary Brant, Secretary – Rick DaPrato, and Treasurer – Jim Pruner. Nominations for all the positions are still open and nominations from the floor will be accepted at the next membership meeting. Once nominations are closed, the election will be held. In addition to the four elected positions there is an assortment of other board positions. We need more people to be involved in management in order to maintain the vitality of the club. Board positions take on average 2-3 hours a month. I believe all of you have something worthwhile to contribute to the club, so please contact me if you are interested in any of the board positions. At our next meeting, in addition to elections, we will have a slide show of photos taken at various times throughout the year. We have the OVSC photos from Aspen, and Dave Groeber, one of our new members on the Aspen trips, took a lot of pictures of his own. Dave will be compiling the slide show and I want any/all of you who took pictures on ski trips, at Happy Hours, or at any other ski club event, to send your digital pictures to Dave so he can include them in the slide show. Dave’s email is david_groeber@hotmail.com and his cell phone is 248-506-8031, if you have any questions for him. Some very interesting and unusual items showed up at the last membership meeting ‘Antiques Night’. Nancy Ferrell brought the most valuable item, three very beautiful gold filigree antique engagement rings. Steve Wolaver brought what I considered the most unusual item, a bronze casting of a recumbent lady wearing a long gown, which amusingly had little hidden hinges underneath on each side and the gown opened up revealing a now naked lady. Apparently these things are quite collectible and are called ‘naughties’ in the antique trade. He also brought a late 19th century German stoneware embossed wine or ale bottle, empty. Hmmm, sex and alcohol…way to go Steve. Jean Banks brought some very pretty hand painted pierced German porcelain plates, some other glass and china, and a music box. Rick and Sandy Schwartz brought a collection of things that included depression glass, milk glass, cut glass, some books, some toys, and a 19th century oak chair. The Antiques dealer suggested that both of the items I brought, a very old Scandinavian pewter platter and an appliqué signature quilt dated 1859, need additional research. That’s it for now. I hope to see many of you at the Election Meeting on April 19th. HEADS UP, Becky, our wonderful social chairperson, is starting to plan the Slush Cup – details in future newsletters. As always, I am always interested in hearing from all of you. I am only a phone call or an e-mail away.

Sincerely, Janet Wentworth, VP. Cell 305-9496, e-mail, janet.wentworth@sbcglobal.net.
